High Speed Drilling in Steel with the MDU NTGRA
April 2013, Mayfair
|Core sample taken from the site showing the steel bar and dense concrete||East Midland Diamond Drilling using the Pentruder MDU-NTGRA Core Drill Motor at the Mayfair site in London|
The MDU-NTGRA proved amazing results for East Midland Diamond Drilling at their site in Mayfair, London this week.
EMDD were tasked with drilling 127mm diameter holes at 1.8m deep, in very dense concrete containing a significant amount of interlocking steel bars. After taking 7 hours to drill just 450mm with their existing equipment, East Midland Diamond Drilling called in the Pentruder MDU-NTGRA. High speed drilling at its best, the MDU-NTGRA only took 1 hour to drill the same depth of 450mm. Not only did the MDU-NTGRA save the operator time, but also money by enabling East Midland Diamond Drilling to finish the job on time.

Watertight diamond drilling
At a recent water plant refurbishment project, a precision diamond coring operation was successfully employed to form a watertight fit for new 900 mm diameter pipework connecting to an existing concrete water tank. Report by Martin Jennings (Diamond Tooling Journal).
The Bough Beech Water Treatment plant is being refurbished as part of the long term plans of Sutton and East Surrey Water plc to upgrade their system to meet future demands and ensure full compliance with ongoing regulations. Sutton and East Surrey Water supplies on average about 165 million litres/day of water to about 630,000 consumers in the London Boroughs of Sutton, Croydon and Merton, and in parts of Surrey and Kent. 15% of the company’s water supplies come from Bough Beech reservoir, the remainder coming from boreholes.
The Bough Beech contract involves the construction of new 900 mm diameter water mains, inlet works, clarifiers, filtration, adsorption and disinfection plants, pump houses and numerous other facilities.
Main contractor for the scheme is Imtech Processing, based in the UK and part of the pan-European Imtech group which provides technical services in the fields of electrical engineering, ICT (information and communication technology) and mechanical engineering. The civil engineering and groundworks have been subcontracted out to UK company, Mackley Construction, specialists in this field. Early on in the project, there was a need to connect a new 900 mm diameter pipe that pumped water from the new relift pump house to an existing clean water tank. As the clean water tank was in constant use, this had to be done as quickly and efficiently as possible. Mackley decided that the best way to do this was by diamond core drilling and called in diamond cutting company Precision Cutting Ltd, with whom they had worked previously.
The clean water tank had concrete walls 520 mm thick, although this could not be confirmed until it was actually drilled through. Also, there was no record of the type and amount of steel reinforcement that would be encountered. The core drilling, therefore, had to be carried out very carefully and within the already restricted time scale.
Correct choice of equipment was essential, so Precision Cutting decided to employ a Pentruder MD1 HF, a high frequency drill rig recently acquired from Pentruder UK. This is a twin column model with a 4 speed MG41 gear box and 380V, 3-phase 22 kW motor. The 900 mm diameter core drill was a type CCD3 supplied by Crewcut Diamond Products. This had 44 diamond segments, each 20 x 8 x 5.5 mm.
Prior to drilling, the outside concrete face of the wall was made good in order to provide a smooth, plane surface. This was to enable the drill rig to mounted squarely to facilitate accuracy and also to accommodate the flange of the water pipe, which was to be bolted onto the outside face to secure the connection. The drilling operation took place over 3 consecutive days. On the first day, a template was used to drill around the outside of the hole area to insert the bolts that would take the pipe flange. The 900 mm diameter drill rig was then set up ready to go.
On the second day, drilling commenced to a depth of 150 mm only. This was to ensure that the system was viable and also to prevent any structural damage to the clean water tank. When the main drilling took place on the third day, the clean water tank had been shut down and drained – only six hours were available for the drilling operation. In the event, the remaining 370 mm of concrete was cored through in just over an hour, despite the presence of 25 mm diameter steel reinforcement adjacent to the inside and outside faces of the concrete. Total penetration rate was around 6 mm/min and cutting accuracy was to within 2.5 mm of diameter.
On completion of drilling, the pipe was bolted to the outer concrete wall, an internal plug inserted and the tank re-filled. Subsequent testing of the joint showed no water leakage, proving the success of the method.
